Between June 1915 to August 1916, the Karst of Castelnuovo was the theatre of many fierce battles. By gaining the Trincea delle Frasche trench, the frontline of the war moved towards Mount San Michele and along the Vallone, however, Castelnuovo was still exploited as a logistic post and foothold behind the lines for the supplies to the troops that were advancing and as a field medical post for the wounded that could not be moved.
Several graffiti were discovered under layers of plaster and years of paint in the main hall of the Villa.
Some of them are perfectly legible, while others are difficult to interpret. The graffiti undoubtedly are the moving evidence that lead us to those soldiers who with a simple signature were demanding to be remembered.
The graffiti record the soldiers' names, surnames, places and dates of birth, their units, their moods, descriptions of battles, drawings and caricatures.
